Preem Redefine HVO100 launches – The world's first Nordic Swan Ecolabel HVO100

Road transport accounts for one-third of climate emissions in Sweden, and last year these emissions increased by 18 percent. To reverse this trend and enable an immediate reduction in fossil carbon dioxide emissions, Preem is now launching Preem Redefine HVO100, a renewable diesel carrying the Nordic Swan Ecolabel, containing zero percent fossil oil.

According to several expert authorities and research institutions, achieving climate targets by reducing fossil emissions from road transport will be challenging. Among others, the Swedish Energy Agency, the Climate Policy Council, and the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency emphasize that an increased share of renewable fuels will be needed to reduce fossil emissions.

Now, Preem is launching Preem Redefine HVO100, a Nordic Swan Ecolabel renewable diesel that reduces fossil emissions by at least 90 percent compared to fully fossil diesel.*

– As Sweden’s largest fuel producer, we have the power to make a real difference. That’s why we are transitioning our refineries from fossil to renewable production. As a result of this transition, we are now launching Preem Redefine HVO100 – the world’s first HVO100 with the Nordic Swan Ecolabel. This makes it easy for customers to switch from fossil to renewable fuel, reducing their carbon footprint immediately – without replacing their vehicle, says Magnus Heimburg, CEO of Preem.

According to the Swedish Transport Analysis Agency, there are approximately five million passenger cars in Sweden, of which over 1.5 million are run on diesel. In the segments of light and heavy trucks, diesel is even more dominant, with about 87 percent of vehicles having diesel engines.

Preem currently has an annual production capacity of circa 300,000 cubic meters of the renewable fuel Preem Redefine HVO100. If this entire volume were to replace diesel with mandatory reduction obligations in the Swedish transport sector, the annual fossil greenhouse gas emissions could be reduced by up to 846,500 tons of CO₂ equivalents. This reduction corresponds to the annual fossil emissions of around 300,000 private diesel cars.

Preem Redefine HVO100 is produced in Gothenburg

The Nordic Swan is the official ecolabel of the Nordic countries, awarded to products and services that meet its ambitious environmental, climate, and health criteria. Preem Redefine HVO100, is the first HVO100 to receive the Nordic Swan Ecolabel, and is produced at Preem’s refinery in Hisingen, Gothenburg.

Preem Redefine HVO100 is produced from raw materials such as by-products from the pulp and food industries and reduces fossil emissions by at least 90%*. It is not produced using palm oil, soy, or residues from the production of these vegetable oils. This means that the product meets the Nordic Swan Ecolabel's criteria, which includes requirements for renewable and fossil-free raw materials, annual documentation of greenhouse gas emissions, and a ban on raw materials such as palm and soy oils.

– With the the Nordic Swan Ecolabel for Preem Redefine HVO100, we at Preem can demonstrate our ambitious sustainability efforts and success in the transition to our consumers. It’s also proof of our commitment to being part of the solution for reducing fossil emissions in the road transport sector in Sweden, continues Magnus Heimburg.

– We are very pleased that with Preem Redefine HVO100, there is now a liquid fuel that meets our strict environmental and climate requirements, making it easier for consumers and buyers to make the right choice. There is an urgent need to accelerate the transition and meet environmental and climate goals, says Anna Linusson, CEO of Ecolabelling Sweden, which is responsible for the Nordic Swan Ecolabel and the EU Ecolabel.

Preem's fuel production can help reduce fossil carbon dioxide emissions in Europe

The demand for alternative fuels that reduce the fossil climate impact of road transport is increasing in Europe. Preem Redefine HVO100 is an concrete example of how Swedish fuel production can contribute to lowering the climate impact of the transport sector.

Preem aims to make Preem Redefine HVO100 available on its export markets as well, but for now, the product can only be offered to parts of the Swedish market.

– We’ve seen strong interest in Preem’s fuels both in the Swedish and across European markets. With a growing presence on the continent, we see great opportunities to increase our sales while actively contributing to the shift toward more sustainable road transport and reduced fossil climate emissions in Europe, concludes Magnus Heimburg.

Facts about Preem Redefine HVO100

• Produced in Gothenburg at Preem’s refinery.
• Carrying the Nordic Swan Ecolabel – meets its criteria for liquid fuels.
• Available at 59 Preem fueling stations starting in May 2025.
• Renewable diesel that is chemically equivalent to fossil diesel – works a full replacement.
• At least 90 percent lower fossil greenhouse gas emissions compared to fossil diesel.*
• High cold resistance – adapted for Nordic climate.
• Raw material base that does not contain palm oil, palm by-products, and soy oil.
• Compatible with existing diesel vehicles – approval from the vehicle manufacturer is recommended before using HVO100. If the fuel cap on your vehicle is marked with "XTL," it means that the vehicle is approved to use HVO100 and thus also Preem Redefine HVO100.

* The method for calculating greenhouse gas emissions in grams CO₂eq/MJ has been carried out in accordance with Article 31 of the EU Renewable Energy Directive (2018/2001/EU) (“RED II”). The reference value used for fossil transport fuel is 94 grams CO₂eq/MJ, as stated in Annex V of RED II, and is used for calculating percentage reduction.
